This assignment involved reading about the psychological perspective of humanism, and then applying our understanding by comparing and contrasting with other psychological perspectives and theories. We also apply our understanding of humanism to social theories such as systemic issues in society.
Humanism's development in the 60's during the civil rights movement explains its strong application to social justice and racial equality. Humanism views individuals holistically, as unique minds each capable of independent thought, emotion, and experience. I believe that this focus is very much so in line with the goals of social justice, and humanism provides a model for how we should understand members of society as individuals rather than lumping them together into groups.
This project was completed throughout the modules of this course. The project involved selecting a scenario, and then applying the concepts of Social Justice, Cultural Fluency, Intercultural Communication, and the Navigation of Conflict to that scenario. In my case, I selected a scenario involving a culturally diverse workplace. For me, this project transformed my appreciation of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Prior to taking this course, I was skeptical of the value of Social Justice, my opinion mostly shaped by online discourse and popular media. However, taking the time to understand these concepts as they are intended to be applied helped me comprehend their value in a caring society. When we recognize the cultural differences between each other, it can empower us to communicate more effectively and more compassionately.
